Parish Pastoral Council
In 2004, in order to realise the Vatican II vision of priests and lay people collaborating in leading parishes, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin sought to have a Parish Pastoral Council established in every parish in the Archdiocese of Dublin. Johnstown already had a Parish Council in place at that time, and since then the good work has continued.
The Irish Bishops conference says about Pastoral Councils:
"The Parish Pastoral Council is a leadership group through which priests and people work together as partners in furthering the mission of Christ in their own place. It does this through building up a vibrant Christian Community that is rooted in baptism and marked by its faith, worship and service.
To fulfil its role the pastoral council needs to be a representative body in which the diversity of the parish community is reflected. It is a means whereby all parishioners can take part in discussions that relate to the parish, its mission and its future development.
The primary ministry of the parish pastoral council is to collaborate in planning the way forward for the parish at its given time. It does this in context of the circumstances of the parish, in the light of the gospel, the teaching of the Church, the ‘signs of the times’ and the reflections of the members of the community."
In June 2009, elections were held to fill 6 vacancies on the Pastoral Council.
At present the members of Johnstown Parish Pastoral Council are:
